Hormone Health, part 1
Hey, friends! It's been a few months since my last (controversial) post, so I thought I'd grace these pages again. The Holidays are over and I finally have just a smidge more time to get back at it.
Some of you know that a year ago I passed my course requirements and examination to become a certified FEMM educator. FEMM is a wonderful organization that teaches and empowers women to make more informed decisions regarding their health, particularly their reproductive health. FEMM stands for Fertility Education and Medical Management. I love teaching women all about their bodies, proper hormone function, and the key cycle event of ovulation. I also enjoy the study of hormonal contraception, namely its negative effects on the body, and the more natural, organic approach FEMM offers for managing fertility. There is so much I could say about all of this, but I want to start out by explaining how I first became interested in these topics and why it intrigues me so much. This would take me back to my years in high school.
As a high school student I always thought hormonal contraception was just "what you did" when you got married and wanted to prevent pregnancy. I knew plenty of respectable women who would have said the same thing. It seemed so "normal". I certainly never thought the Bible had anything to say about it; but I was certainly mistaken.
During my senior year of college I did an internship at a pregnancy help center near my hometown and it was there that I first began learning more about hormonal contraception and how it actually works (more on that in a later post). My fascination with learning more about it, and particularly its relationship with Christians, began to grow. In response to my newfound knowledge I did a group project in the final semester of my senior year for my Senior Wellness class based on different methods of contraception, the effects on the body, and how believers should respond to hormonal contraception. I was deeply intrigued by this further study, as well as all of the newfound natural methods of managing fertility, without the negative effects of hormonal contraceptives.
With all of this new information, and pending marriage, PB and I decided to utilize a natural method of managing our fertility and I recruited the help of a basal body temperature thermometer to help me know when I was fertile and when I was not. This method worked great for us, but I still wanted to learn more.
A couple years after we were married I was presented with an opportunity to take classes through FEMM and my work. I first took the FEMM education classes as a client, then decided to take the classes to become an educator. I have never regretted that decision, and my knowledge of the male and female bodies, hormones, and fertility has been richly enhanced. Since then I've had the wonderful privilege of teaching many women more about their body, how to manage their cycle and fertility, and showing them a better option than traditional hormonal contraception. So far I have not had a bad response! All the positive responses and excitement of my clients just proves again that women want better for themselves than the typical status quo of hormonal contraception.
I am excited to continue learning more about how God created our bodies, and I'm also excited to continue educating more women in these topics, as well. Stay tuned for the next post on how hormonal contraception operates in the body. Thanks for reading! Let me know if you have questions, or would like to learn more about FEMM.
