Dear Miles (Five Months)


Dear Miles,

You’re five months old! This last month has been an absolute blast! You are becoming so much more predictable in your schedule and that helps us out so much. You are developing a wonderful, sweet personality and seeing you continue to grow and change has been our greatest delight. Here are some of your top achievements and memories from your fifth month of life-

-          Giggling so much more and at the silliest things
-          Enthralled and entertained by Riggins
-          Went to your first student ministry Winter Retreat
-          Traveled to Indiana with mama for your buddy, Baby O’s, baby shower
-          Visited a new state, Michigan, and met your new buddy Derek
-          Still sleeping through the night (10-12 hours) and napping about 5 hours during the day
-          Love sitting at the table with mama and daddy during dinner time
-          Love your new swing and watching mama and daddy workout while you chill
-          Still super chatty and have taken up the new hobby of yelling/screaming

We are so amused by you and absolutely love the privilege and honor of being your parents, Miles. We pray every day for you to grow up strong, healthy, and following Christ with your whole heart. You are loved beyond measure, sweet boy. I hope you always know that.

Dear Delainey, I am so excited that you're finally here! Of course, you are worth the wait, but it's such a relief to hold you in my arms and watch you breathe. Here are some of the details of your birth... It didn't really go anything like I expected, but you're here safe and sound, and that's all I really wanted. We were scheduled to be induced on Wednesday, April 15, at 7am. Milan spent the night at Grammy and Papa's and I went out for an early morning walk with Riggins for one last attempt at starting some contractions naturally. I felt a few minor contractions but nothing too substantial. Daddy and I got checked in at the hospital just after 7am, and that began a long, slow marathon to your birth. I was given Cytotec to ripen my cervix and then eventually Pitocin was started to induce contractions. Stories

Stories. Everyone has them. They are shared around a campfire on a starry summer night. They are sad, joyful, and everything in between. They are of lessons learned, often the hard way. They serve as warnings and inspiration. Jesus used them to get his point across. The Bible is full of them. True stories. My church has, for a long time, encouraged the use of stories to be employed in services and as a means to help others. For a while I resisted this idea, thinking “Shouldn’t Jesus be enough? Whatever these people tell me I can just hear right from Jesus.” As I was pondering these thoughts I was confronted with more issues in which the element of story was used very powerfully in my life. I heard a sermon series on Jesus’ use of parables [a fancy word for stories], which really helped me experience for myself some of their power and effectiveness. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly.

“But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the lifter of my head” Psalm 3:3. In the midst of tumult and discouragement I am quick to ask God “why”. Why do I have to do this? Why now? Why me? Why does this have to be so hard? For the record, I get that life is hard. I get that ministry is challenging. I get that this is all part of my sanctification process. I get it. But I still don’t always like it. It is so easy for me to be self-focused during these times. How I’m not getting what I want. How I don’t feel like serving. How I want it to go my way. It is in these moments that I get a glimpse into my own depravity. God, in His rich mercy and love, allows me to catch a glimpse of my ugly heart (and trust me, I’ve been seeing a lot of ugly recently). But He doesn’t stop there.
