Dear Little Bear [Second Trimester]

Dear Little Bear,
We had a big, eventful second trimester! The coolest thing was definitely finding out that you are a GIRL! We're so excited to have you in our family, sweet girl, and we're excited to see you have a big, protective brother, too. I've had some fun already beginning to transform the nursery into a girl's room. That was another big thing this trimester- moving Milan into his new room and bed, to make room for you and all the girl stuff in the nursery. He made the transition so smoothly, which has been a big blessing! Next up is some paint and laundering the girl stuff we have already. 


You've been a great little travel buddy this trimester, too. We've made many trips back and forth to Indiana to see family, especially Grandma (aka- Bama, as Milan calls her), as much as possible. Bama is sick, and we're not sure how much time we have left with her, but we are making the best of whatever time we have left! We've been working on your baby quilt and she's crocheting around a beautiful flannel blanket for you, too. I made a darling little diaper clutch for you, too, which will coordinate with your quilt and blanket. I also made a new, floral nursing/car seat cover. We're slowly but surely getting ready for your arrival!


We are so excited to meet you, sweet girl, and we already love you so, so much! Keep doing your thing in there, and we'll keep getting ready for you out here. We pray every day for your health and for your heart to be turned to Christ from an early age. That is the best thing we could ever hope for you.

Dear Delainey, I am so excited that you're finally here! Of course, you are worth the wait, but it's such a relief to hold you in my arms and watch you breathe. Here are some of the details of your birth... It didn't really go anything like I expected, but you're here safe and sound, and that's all I really wanted. We were scheduled to be induced on Wednesday, April 15, at 7am. Milan spent the night at Grammy and Papa's and I went out for an early morning walk with Riggins for one last attempt at starting some contractions naturally. I felt a few minor contractions but nothing too substantial. Daddy and I got checked in at the hospital just after 7am, and that began a long, slow marathon to your birth. I was given Cytotec to ripen my cervix and then eventually Pitocin was started to induce contractions. Stories

Stories. Everyone has them. They are shared around a campfire on a starry summer night. They are sad, joyful, and everything in between. They are of lessons learned, often the hard way. They serve as warnings and inspiration. Jesus used them to get his point across. The Bible is full of them. True stories. My church has, for a long time, encouraged the use of stories to be employed in services and as a means to help others. For a while I resisted this idea, thinking “Shouldn’t Jesus be enough? Whatever these people tell me I can just hear right from Jesus.” As I was pondering these thoughts I was confronted with more issues in which the element of story was used very powerfully in my life. I heard a sermon series on Jesus’ use of parables [a fancy word for stories], which really helped me experience for myself some of their power and effectiveness. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly.

“But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the lifter of my head” Psalm 3:3. In the midst of tumult and discouragement I am quick to ask God “why”. Why do I have to do this? Why now? Why me? Why does this have to be so hard? For the record, I get that life is hard. I get that ministry is challenging. I get that this is all part of my sanctification process. I get it. But I still don’t always like it. It is so easy for me to be self-focused during these times. How I’m not getting what I want. How I don’t feel like serving. How I want it to go my way. It is in these moments that I get a glimpse into my own depravity. God, in His rich mercy and love, allows me to catch a glimpse of my ugly heart (and trust me, I’ve been seeing a lot of ugly recently). But He doesn’t stop there.
